About this SiteWho is running this show?I'm Greg!Erm, can you elaborate on that a little?Well, Greg is short for Gregory. Though nobody that's called me by that name has been seen since...... oh alright. For starters, I can't draw. Actually, I'm underselling myself - you see, I can draw; I just don't have the time. I also have a habit of not finishing things I start. Reading books, writing, and drawing are three things that are - unfortunately - in this category. Amongst other things, what is important to me right now is creating a presence on the web; a portfolio of web sites, if you will. This portfolio will become useful to me in my profession. My first website eventually became known as 'PC Trek', and was a link list of pages relating to Star Trek games on the PC. It was live on the net between 1995 and 1997. At the same time, I worked on websites and material for the Rifts RPG and Doctor Who. Unfortunately, none of these sites exist today. Since then, I have worked in the Logistics industry, providing enterprise solutions for the supply chain. In amongst this work have been a number of web-based prototypes, including early web UI experiments and real time order tracking. These days, the web is once again a hobby for me - just the way I like it.Regarding Doctor Who: It all (re)started with a near-brakedown at work. To escape, I took a holiday around Europe with Contiki (http://gmaskew.com). It was my third time to the UK, but it was the first time I really had the chance to hunt around the London and surrounds. In my hunting, I discovered Tenth Planet. Since then, my passion for the series has been reignited with a vengence. Aside from Tenth Planet, blame for this can also be laid at the feet of Big Finish and their audio adventures. Prior to this, it had really been seven or eight years since I had any real interest in the series (probably a lot longer).Okay, so what is this place? This place is Home. In a nutshell, Home serves two functions: a place that creative folks who love Doctor Who can literally call home; and a collection of links to the websites of those who are lucky enough to have their own homes.I think that it's important that those who want to contribute something to the internet community are not hampered by the costs of webspace, just so that they can share high quality images and creations without compromising on quality or compression.(7-July-05)Home has been online since October 2004, and has since grown to include a number of extremely talented graphical designers and artists. One of these people has even used the space to create a Big Finish Trailer site (check the links page!). Some of the artists manage their own sites, and others are looked after by me (Greg). So what's on offer?Free webspace for starters. Home has about 4 gigabytes that I will never be able to use, along with 75 gigabytes of monthly bandwidth. When I signed up for the webspace, I only purchased 450 megabytes; the service provider has since increased this at no extra charge to me.The only rule is that the webspace be used for sites and creations that are related to Doctor Who, specifically covers and imagery for DVD's and Audio releases. Where space is still available, I'm willing to extend an invitation to any other artists, writers, or ... whoevers, that have Doctor Who related works. The secondary offering is a place where other related sites can be linked from. After all - not everyone will need space, and there are some amazing places out in cyberspace already! How much space can I have?Good question! I'm thinking that 200 megabytes is a nice round figure, but with Doctor Who now back on tele, we'll just play it by ear!Why not just on-sell the space to friends and relatives? You DO have friends and relatives, don't you?I've been lurking around Outpost Gallifrey for years now. Having recently made my humble self a username in the forums, it has come to my attention that many of the artists that present their works to the community are having to resort to uploading lesser quality versions of their work. As someone who will no doubt benefit from the hard work and effort of these people, I don't want to see artificial limitations such as bandwidth or filesize restrictions impede your work.Yes, I have friends. No, they couldn't use this much space either.Alright, I fit your tough criteria. How do I get some webspace for my collection of totally rad covers?Just ask! Email me, tell me what you've got in mind, and how much room you will need. We'll then do lunch, talk strategies and budgets, arrange a few meetings, call a few people, and use buzzwords like 'networking', 'synergies', and 'moving forward'.Or, I'll just give you a username, and tell you to go play. When you're done, I'll link you to the front pages, and you're good to go!(7-July-05) I don't know the first thing about creating websites, or uploading images - help!My suggestion would be to spend time searching the wide world of the internet, and learn a little about things like FTP and HTML. You need to be able to use FTP to send the files to your site; HTML is used to build webpages, should you want to put a webpage around your creations. Trust me - neither FTP or HTML is rocket science! For a number of the current artists, I am looking after the tech stuff for them. You can probably pick these pages, as they all look identical except for the images! Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your point of view) there is only one of me, and I only have two hands. Given the current amount of work I'm doing here to keep things up to date and honky dorey, I don't have the time to take on any more work.My original pledge was to help people out with webspace; the space is still here crying out for someone to use it. Unfortunately, while helping out with creating and maintaining webpages, organising and publishing images is something I really enjoy doing, I will probably not have time to take on that work for additional artists. Apologies in advance if this causes you grief. How do I tell the world that my covers are here? How do I contact the artists who have covers here? The forums on Outpost Gallifrey are where the idea for this site gained form. Anyone who is anyone is over there, and that includes the artists here. I have included email addresses where they are available, but Outpost Gallifrey is the place to be. I've got a website with covers that dazzle, covers that blow people's minds, covers that rival the very best these people offer. Link to me!Sure - Email me. And quit with the posturing. | |||||||||||||
